MESH Board of Directors Member Dr. Lisa Harris, was recognized by the White House and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) yesterday. Dr. Harris, was one of eighty-two healthcare providers from across the country who were recognized for their successful implementation of electronic health record (EHR) technology.

During the town hall event, senior White House and HHS officials discussed progress and barriers on the road toward a national health IT system. Staff from the HHS Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) was on hand as Dr. Harris shared her insights regarding the ever-changing role of health IT in healthcare. The importance of health IT adoption and effective implementation was underscored today, as the ONC announced that more than 100,000 health care providers are using electronic health records that meet federal standards.

Under the leadership of Dr. Harris, Wishard has been an active participant in the ONC’s Beacon Program. The Beacon Community Cooperative Agreement Program is part of a larger movement to modernize healthcare through technology. The Program seeks to demonstrate how health IT investments and EHRs advance the vision of patient-centered care, while achieving the three-part aim of better health, better care at lower cost.
