1.Identify the Core Message

2.Remove Jargon

3.Use Analogies

4.Check for Clarity

Then write what you would say to the patient/client after using the 4-step process to simplify and create plain language. Post in discussion topic forum.

Your First Step: The Plain Language Challenge

Purpose: Put these principles into practice

1. Assess before you assume: from assumption to insight.

2. Adapt for culture, not just words.

3. Deliver through trusted channels.

1. Choose one health topic relevant to your community.

2. Find one piece of material explaining the health topic that uses medical jargon.

3. Rewrite the key-points (at least 2) that you feel are necessary for your client to understand using the plain language principles we discussed.

Reminder: Maximum 255 Words.

Communication 4a

Pause & Reflect: From Theory to Your Practice

1. Think of a time you received care. What specific words or actions made you feel truly understood?

2. Now, consider you’re your own work. What barriers- such as workload, burnout, or stress- can prevent you from demonstrating empathy at times?

Reminder: Maximum 255 Words.

Communication 4c

The goal is not to find the “right” answer, but to develop self-awareness.

  1. When do you feel most "at home," and who is in that environment?

  2. Describe a recent situation where you made quick judgments about someone. What influenced those judgments?

  3. What topics make you uncomfortable or defensive?

Communication 5b

This week, choose one component from the active listening checklist and use it in a real conversation.

It might be:– giving full attention,– asking one open-ended question,– pausing before you respond,– or reflecting back what you heard.

You don’t have to do everything at once. Small, intentional practice is how skills grow.

Notice what changes—how the other person responds, how the conversation feels, and what you learn.

Listening gets stronger the same way trust does: one moment at a time. Which active listening component did you choose and why? How do you think this will improve your abilities as a Community Health Worker? Reflect on this experience and post.

Reminder: Maximum 255 Words.
